Home The Rhythm Hunters The Rhythm Hunters were a big hit with Years Five, Six and Seven at St Catherine's Catholic College in 2011. They also ran a holiday workshop at the Singleton Youth Venue in October 2011, for members of the wider community. These inspiring events were funded by a "Becoming Asia Literate Grant" under the "National Asian Languages Scheme Program", of which St Catherine's Catholic Colllege was a recipient in 2011. As these events were such positive experiences for our students, we hope to make them an annual event.
This year's events for our students with the Rhythm Hunters have been made possible by their co-sponsorship by a range of local businesses. We would like to thank and acknowledge the generosity of Kirkwood Produce, Smith's Smash Repairs, Kevin O'Brien Optometrists, PD Bags, Pegasus and Singleton Hi-Fi. Without their generous support, these events would not have been possible this year.
The Rhythm Hunters are a World Music Ensemble based on the Central Coast of New South Wales. Led by Rendra Freestone, The Rhythm Hunters play an inspired brand of physical drumming blended with tuned wood blocks & bronze percussion. Asian flute music is woven delicately into the thundering sound fabric of drums, gongs and a range of bamboo instruments to create a music of heaven and earth. The choreographed approach has evolved naturally, yet is linked to Rendra's Indonesian heritage, background in Martial Arts, Martial Percussion, dance choreography, West Sumatran Randai Theatre and Japanese Taiko drumming.
On Thursday July 26, students from Years five, six and seven engaged in an interactive Performance with the Rhythm Hunters. On Friday July 27, Year Seven enjoyed workshopping in small groups, to learn some of the traditional, inspiring and unique rhythms of Indonesia, together with learning how to appreciate and play some of the the wide variety of instruments and styles of music of the Indonesian Archipelago. Here are some wonderful snippets from this year's workshops, with our Year Seven Students...
